What are Walk and Talk sessions?
Walk and talk sessions are an intervention based in mindfulness, and can be helpful in supporting clients’ ability to relax, decrease rumination, release physical tension, practice deep breathing, and receive mind-body insight while processing experiences. During Walk and Talk sessions, clients talk with me while walking outdoors rather than while sitting in a therapy office or in front of their computers/electronic devices. Walking side by side helps some clients feel more present and comfortable when sharing in the therapy process.
*Walk and Talk sessions require an initial intake session conducted virtually, and completion of Walk and Talk consent form prior to engagement.
What can I expect during a Walk and Talk Session?
We will meet and start to walk; maybe in a park, along a waterfront, on a trail, through a neighborhood, or in a place that works best for you. Walking side by side we will discuss what comes up for you as related to your therapeutic goals, just as we would if we were meeting in office or for a virtual session. The movement in these sessions is easygoing. You will set the pace and I will follow your lead.
At times we may take a few moments to stand in silent meditation, to practice deep breathing, or to engage in a guided relaxation/grounding practice.
What are the potential benefits of Walk and Talk Therapy?
Walk and Talk therapy sessions present opportunity for reducing anxiety, reducing symptoms of depression, reducing intrusive and ruminative thoughts, reducing feelings of stress and anger, improving mood, emotion regulation and sleep, and for improving overall ability to cope with challenging life experiences.
Is Walk and Talk Therapy considered exercise?
While movement may be a benefit to clients physically, the focus is not about exercise. Sessions are focused on allowing you to process your thoughts and feelings. Clients who consent to engaging in Walk and Talk sessions agree that they are in appropriate physical and medical condition, and do not suffer from any known disability or condition which would prevent or limit their participation in sessions. Clients maintain full responsibility for their medical and physical well-being during each session.
How is confidentiality managed during Walk and Talk sessions?
Participating in Walk and Talk sessions and being out in public presents some limits to confidentiality, including the possibility that other people may hear parts of our conversation. I will do everything that I can to protect your confidentiality during Walk and Talk sessions, including following your lead if we encounter someone you know, and not acknowledging you as a client if I encounter someone I know. You may change your mind at any point in a Walk and Talk session, and can return to virtual sessions as desired. If you choose to participate in Walk and Talk sessions, we will discuss any concerns and how you prefer to handle potential risks to confidentiality.
